about

The Wild Seeds know time. They know the backstreets of Richmond, the lonely honky-tonks of Jackson and Baton Rouge, the smoky stages of New York City. They know the boredom of the endless wait, the relief of the open gas station at 4 a.m., the exuberance of earned encores in packed clubs. The Wild Seeds know rock 'n' roll. The proof is in the grooves of Brave, Clean and Reverent, the band's full-length album debut on Jungle Records.

Like the Mexican food they use for fuel, the Wild Seeds are a blend of the spicy and the cool, equally adept at burning fury, popsicle whimsy and rom-antic in-trospection. The sounds on Brave, Clean and Reverent range across the musical map, from the battering ram guitars on "Love Will Make You Weak" to the delicacy of "Big Moon,' the lovliest ballad the Everly Brothers never sang. With lyrics that offer a counterpoint to the idealism implied in its title, Brave, Clean and Reverent is a modern record in an old vein: low on fashion content, high on real emotion.

Michael Hall, a former Army brat and lifelong soul music fanatic, started the Wild Seeds in late 1983. Like a hundred other neophyte Austin combos, they cut their teeth at parties, lofts and tiny bars near the University of Texas campus. Initially a frenzied garage band, the Wild Seeds quickly crafted their own sound and, in the summer of '84, put it on vinyl.

The record was a self-produced EP called Life is Grand (Life in Soul City). Critics in the U.S., France and Great Britian fell over themselves praising its engaging pop smarts. But by the time Life is Grand was released in January 1985, three-fourths of the Wild Seeds had taken off, for marriage, for Mexico and for another band. Hall reformed the band that spring with three like-minded souls--Joey Shuffield (drums), Steve McCracken (bass) and Bo Solomon (lead guitar). Shuffield and McCracken served their apprenticeship with bands in their respective hometowns of Austin and Houston, and St. Louis native Solomon had seen duty with a Missouri surf band called the Smart Alecks. And all three had played together in Stand Ready, a short lived Austin band.

Prior to recording Brave, the band thrice toured the East, the South and the Midwest of these United States, appeared on MTV's The Cutting Edge, played the 1986 New Music Seminar and saw their names and faces in such media organs as Spin, Rolling Stone and Newsweek. To paraphrase one of the songs on the new album, this band works hard. Brave, Clean and Reverent. World-shaking rock and roll from the Wild Seeds!
